昨日、某メーリング・リストに投稿された記事です。「もしみんなが望遠鏡を持っていたら…」というタイトル（以下、適当訳）。

出典が明記されてませんが、たぶん彼の代表作『一般天文学（Astronomie Populaire）』の一節ではないかと思います。天文趣味は世界を変える…という彼の予想は残念ながら外れましたが、19世紀には天文趣味にそれだけ大きな期待がかけられていた、ということは記憶されてよいのではないでしょうか。
フラマリオンのこの本は以前もご紹介しました（http://mononoke.asablo.jp/blog/2006/01/27/228265）。上の写真はその英訳本“Popular Astronomy”です（Gore 訳、Appleton、1925）。これとても読んでないことに変わりはないんですが、フランス語よりはまだ取っ付き易いかと思って、本棚に並べてあります。
それと、この本にはもう１つ別の興味もありました。（…以下明日に続く）
