月や星の美しさを讃える人は遠い昔からいましたし、洋の東西を問わず、それを詠んだ詩文も数多くあるようです。しかし、それはいわゆる「天文趣味」とは一寸違うような気がします。
遥かなる星界の神秘に触れ、想像を絶した人外境に息を呑む…そうした営みが始まったのは、当然そのための手段が生まれてから以降のことです。それがなければ月のクレーターも、木星の偉容も、土星の輪も、天の川を埋める無数の星々も、目にすることはできず、そういったものなしに「天文趣味」を云々することは、私には抵抗があります。
したがって、私にとっての「天文趣味」は「望遠鏡趣味」とほぼ同義なのです。
そうした意味での天文趣味の歴史は、17世紀初頭、ガリレオが『星界の報告』を出版したことで突如として始まりました。まさに天文趣味のビッグバンです。

最近、「ハーシェルによる天王星発見のニュースが、日本に伝わったのはいつか？」という問題を考えています。これが一見簡単なようでいて、意外に難しく、まだ答えが見えません。そこで、ちょっと視点を変えて、「中国にはいつ伝わったのか？」という点を知りたいと思います。何か手掛かりはありますか？日本で調べようと思うと、文献と言語の壁があって、なかなか大変です。何か情報をご教示いただければ幸いです。

I have no idea to the questions. But I think there are many hints.
We know that John Herschel published a book titled Outlines of Astronomy in 1849. It was translated in Chinese by British missionary Alexander Wylie (偉烈亞力) and 李善蘭 in 1859. It was published by 墨海書館 in Shanghai, the Chinese title was 談天. The second edition (by 徐建寅) was published in 1874 by adding latest discoveries of the time.

According to a Chinese website, fellows of 江南製造局翻譯館 translated many Western materials into Chinese. It is well-known for the high quality of the translation. The bureau hired 50 Chinese scholars and 9 foreigners, including a Japanese named 藤田豐八.

談天 is the first book introducing modern astronomy to China,. and it was the best selling of the time.
(It is in fact that the Japanese studied the history very well. I heard of 談天 from a book named "翔べ！大清帝国". The author is 武田雅哉. Back to 1988 he publish a book in Japan. He said the Japanese publisher bankrupted, so the Japanese version is no longer available. If you are interested in 理科書, the book is your cup of tea. Perhaps you may get a secondhand one in your country?)

「談天」は中国で出版された直後、日本でも出版されました。その日本版は私も on-line で見たことがあるのですが、しかし、ジョン・ハーシェル伝（侯失勒約翰傳）を含む中国版は、これまでネット上で見つけられませんでした。今回、SBODさんのおかげで、その一部を見ることができ、とても嬉しく思います。
「翔べ！大清帝国」は昔、本屋の店頭で見た記憶があるのですが、読んだことはありません。さっそく古書店に発注しました。
日本ハーシェル協会の記事は…むむむ…私が書きました。。。

It is not until 2004 the book was finally translated into Chinese, and this is the only version. It is just too late.
